CJ Peterson is the Area Director of Hillyard in North Spokane. She grew up attending Central Peninsula Church, you might remember her as CJ Johansen, and after attending Whitworth University in Spokane, Washington she moved to the East Bay to work with urban youth, and helped to relaunch Berkeley Young Life. She was the Area Director in Berkeley for 6 years before being called to ministry in Spokane. CJ married Drew Peterson in 2016.
Hillyard is one of the poorest neighborhoods in Spokane and is home to the most ethnically diverse schools in Spokane. CJ oversees YoungLives, Young Life’s ministry to teen mom’s, and ministries focused on reaching students at Rogers High School, Garry Middle School, and developing ministry at the continuation High School. These schools range in diversity of ethnicities, cultures, socioeconomics, and religions. With a group of volunteer leaders from Whitworth University and surrounding churches, Young Life aims to reach out to all high schoolers so that every youth has the opportunity to hear the gospel and know Jesus in a safe and fun environment.
During the summer North Spokane Young Life takes teens to various Young Life camps including outreach camp and discipleship camp. They also meets weekly on Monday nights as volunteer leaders pour the love of Christ into Hillyard area teenagers and walk along side them during these formative years.
